Report: Climate Change and Food Security in Eastern Europe
The recently published report presents the key findings of two scenario workshops with experts and regional stakeholders on climate change and food security that were conducted in February and May 2011 in Eastern Europe. The scenario workshops were part of the OSZE project „Climate Change and Security: Scenarios for Eastern Europe“, jointly organised by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the European Environment Agency (EEA), and the Environment and Security Initiative (ENVSEC). adelphi supported the OSCE in the preparation and implementation of the workshops, and documented the results in a final report. The scenario report identified that food security will be imperilled by the combination of climate change and market forces: Both will significantly impact food affordability, which is particularly problematic as Eastern European citizens already need to spend large parts of their household income on food products. Consequently, adaptation to climate change in the agricultural sector will be particularly necessary. » more

Study Tour: Potential to conserve energy through energy efficiency
One of the simplest and most promising ways of conserving energy – in particular from a climate protection perspective – is to reduce the need to generate, transport, store and consume it in the first place. Countries in South Asia are faced with energy shortages while energy consumption continues to rise. In light of this, these countries must strive to boost energy efficiency, as this presents huge potential for conserving energy. As part of the Regional Energy Efficiency Project (REEP) South Asia, adelphi organized a study tour from 22 to 31 August 2011 in Berlin and Frankfurt for a delegation from India and Nepal on the topic of financing energy efficiency measures. » more

As a result of the sluggish pace of international climate negotiations, the debate on climate engineering (CE) – technological intervention to counteract the effects of climate change on the planet, also known as geoengineering – is gaining in significance. However, it is virtually impossible to gauge the risks of climate engineering and its potential side-effects. In light of this, the Office of Technology Assessment at the German Federal Parliament (TAB) has commissioned a report on the regulation and assessment of climate engineering. adelphi is a project partner in the consortium led by Kiel Earth Institutes. » more
