Politics | Economics
Policy analysis and economics are key control parameters in meeting the challenges of the 21st century. Sustainable future strategies focus on linking the promotion of innovation with a responsibility towards society and the environment. This not only determines business competitiveness, but also plays a decisive role in a country's development. adelphi advises public and private-sector actors on all major concerns in this field, including the design of international trade rules, as well as competition and industrial policy rules – all policy areas that can significantly influence the dissemination of new environmental technologies. We are concerned with the (further) development of sustainability strategies, environmental law, and issues in sustainable patterns of consumption. In our work, we evaluate sustainability strategies, develop concepts to facilitate improved interconnectivity in industrial, competitive, and consumer policies and employ travelling exhibitions, training programmes and continuous dialogue processes to support the dissemination of new knowledge and innovative technologies.
Trade and Economic Development
The on-going globalisation process in the world's economy needs binding international rules. Such rules are not only required to achieve economic objectives, but to solve other global challenges such as environmental, social and development issues. adelphi supports dialogue processes between decision-makers in politics and industry and drafts new rules for international trade. We evaluate measures to promote exports, develop innovative instruments for export promotion, hold training courses, and organise study tours for experts. » more
Integrated Product Policy and Labelling
The patterns of production and consumption in industrialised countries are not sustainable. The economic development of such newly industrialised countries as Brazil, China, India and South Africa show that resource use needs to be significantly reduced in the long term. adelphi advises decision-makers within Germany and abroad on innovative environmental and resource policies. We develop training courses, programmes and instruments on an integrated product policy for companies and promote such national and international policy instruments as ecolabelling. » more
Sustainable Consumption and Procurement
Taking ecological and social criteria into account when buying products or services supports sustainable markets and production. adelphi is the project executing agency for the German dialogue process on sustainable production and consumption. For the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, we are investigating the application of environmental aspects in public procurement and identifying innovative approaches in the consumer policies in other countries. » more
Strategies for Sustainability and Environmental Law
Today's environmental policies deal with more than just effectively protecting natural resources. They also seek to develop sustainable approaches to lifestyles and business. adelphi advises public and private-sector actors on key issues in this field – from the production of a code of environmental law to implementing the EU services directive into German law. We organise training programmes and evaluate sustainability strategies and their interaction in private and public-sector institutions. » more
Transport and Tourism
Moving people and goods quickly, efficiently, and cheaply is a key structural feature of modern societies. At the same time, the steady growth in mobility and increasing energy demands present serious challenges to transport systems, the service and tourism industry, and the environment. adelphi develops sustainable transport and tourism concepts for clients within Germany and abroad, including by implementing energy efficiency measures and funding investments in renewable energy. A five-year "Hotel and Catering Energy Campaign" highlights energy cutting measures for hotels, inns and restaurants in Germany, and encourages appropriate implementation. » more
Competition and Industrial Policy
Environmental technologies play a leading role in growth and jobs. The political sphere is called on to set conditions and incentives to further enhance the market chances of ecological innovations. For many years adelphi has been supporting the process of development towards an ecological industrial policy – for example, through workshops or draft and position papers. On behalf of the European Commission, we have investigated whether variations in EU policy implementation in Member States result in market distortion. » more
