Esther Zippel is Managing Director of the German EMAS Advisory Board's office (UGA), which is hosted by adelphi. In her role as Managing Director, she is advancing and promoting the EU Commission's Joint Environmental Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), which is used by companies and organisations to improve their environmental performance. Through her work, she is spreading awareness about the EMAS, advancing its implementation, and bringing together different stakeholder groups. In her role as Environmental Manager, she is responsible for ensuring that the UGA office’s environmental management system is run and maintained in accordance with EMAS regulations
As part of her project and committee work, Esther develops information material that aim to further diffuse the principles of the EMAS. She also formulates manuals to guide the implementation of EMAS. Additionally, she produces material and commissions studies that connect EMAS with contemporary topics such as sustainability, climate protection, biological diversity, and resource protection. Simultaneously, she coordinates different projects, the work of the committee, and the different working groups. Amongst other tasks, Esther organises the sessions of the four working groups and the Plenary, which is made up of 50 committee members. Moreover, she supervises the UGA working groups on the further development of the EMAS regulations, guidelines and the reference documents for specific sectors. She engages in regular contact and knowledge exchanges with national and international institutions, such as the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), the German Environment Agency (UBA), the European Commission, and the European EMAS-Help desk in order to increase participation with EMAS as well as the use of EMAS in the legal context.
Prior to joining adelphi, Esther Zippel worked as a Project Manager at the QS - Qualität and Sicherheit GmbH. She was responsible for developing the quality standards, the benchmarking, and communicating with expert committees. Prior, Esther worked at the ZMP Zentrale Markt- und Preisberichtstelle für Erzeugnisse der Land-, Forst- und Ernährungswirtschaft GmbH, where she was responsible for the creation and publication of information materials for the organic agricultural market.
Esther Zippel holds a Diplom degree in agricultural sciences (eq. MA) from the University of Bonn.
