The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is hosting a workshop and study tour on "System Integration of Variable Renewables – Focus on Supply Side Flexibility" from Wednesday, 1 November to 3 November in Berlin. The study tour is organized by adelphi.

The rising share of variable renewable energy worldwide such as wind and solar power requires high levels of flexibility in the power system to deal with the variability in the supply/demand balance of electricity. One key aspect to provide this flexibility (next to grid infrastructure, electricity storage and demand side response) is power plant flexibility.

The event is open to a general expert audience from government, academia/consulting and industry. The workshop on 1 November discusses challenges and opportunities regarding e.g. regulation, technologies and market design for facilitating the use of the large amount of technically available flexibility in many power systems.

Experiences on how to assess power plant flexibility and how to increase technical capabilities cost effectively are presented and discussed. The aim is to enable an exchange between policy makers, utilities, manufacturers, and regulators to share experiences and establish best practices for solutions that increase power plant flexibility. The workshop further takes a look at power system flexibility in a broader context and the mix of flexible resources.

adelphi has designed and organised the study tour (2 - 3 November) that offers the opportunity to discover some of the topics discussed in the workshop during visits of power plants and other sites.
