Inadequate waste management in Algeria leads to environmental impacts such as air pollution, soil, ground and surface water contamination, and incorporates sanitary risks for the local population. Algerian municipalities therefore aim for an integrated waste and resource management system, including prevention, recycling, treatment, and sanitary disposal of their wastes.
In support of this, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has now contracted adelphi to develop and implement a capacity building programme for local representatives and political decision-makers responsible for waste management in Algeria. In cooperation with Pöyry Environment GmbH, Atlas Environnement, and other local trainers, adelphi will provide four training of trainers sessions on integrated waste and resource management, and will develop supportive actions for implementation together with the municipal representatives. Focus themes are organization and management of landfills, communication and awareness raising, optimization and management of waste collection, and sanitary and safety requirements for waste collection, transportation and disposal.
This capacity building programme is being organised in the framework of a regional capacity building programme of GIZ for Maghreb municipalities.
