On 24 November 2014, Gerd Müller, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, presented the Charter for the Future ("Zukunftscharta") to the German Chancellor, entitled "ONE WORLD – Our Responsibility". In the run-up to this, adelphi was involved in the Charter’s content development.
Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Gerd Müller presented the Charter for the Future (“Zukunftscharta”) to the German Chancellor at the ONE WORLD forum, which hosted over 100 initiatives and around 3000 guests. The Charter, consisting of almost 60-pages and bearing the title „ONE WORLD – Our Responsibility“, presents recommendations for fostering sustainability in each of the most diverse areas of life, whether politics, the economy or everyday life.
The Charter for the Future demands that decision-makers in industrialised countries have a greater awareness of sustainability, as well as the long-term ecological and social impacts of political and economic action. In addition, it calls for a higher sense of responsibility when dealing with natural resources, as well as the public’s commitment in sharing this responsibility.
adelphi moderated thematic forums during development of the Charter for the Future
The Charter for the Future was drawn up between April and November 2014 and is the result of nationwide dialogue between the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) as well as representatives from aid organisations, non-governmental organisations, foundations, churches and central stakeholders from the economic and scientific fields. Five thematic forums dealt with varying aspects of sustainability and development, together with an Internet platform where the general public could contribute their own ideas and suggestions.
adelphi developed the methodology for two of the forums that dealt with the economic and ecological dimensions of the sustainability concept, and moderated the working groups. As part of the "Global Partnerships" forum adelphi presented the SEED Initiative as an example of a successful partnership for action on sustainable development and the green economy. Panel member Rainer Agster, Director of Private Sector Cooperation at adelphi, discussed as to how the issues of sustainable economic growth and dignified employment could be implemented within the context of development policy (further information).
