Cities are facing enormous challenges: a growing population, an increase of CO2 emissions, and climate change impacts threatening residential and industrial areas. The KfW symposium "Cities in a Changing Climate", organised by adelphi, addresses these issues.
By 2030, three out of five persons will be living in cities. Already today, the majority of global greenhouse gas emissions is related to cities, their inhabitants and urban economies. At the same time the impact of climate change as heavy rains, dry periods or flooding threatens urban livelihoods and economic activities, especially in the rapidly growing urban areas of developing countries and emerging economies. In order to secure urban residential and industrial areas, city administrations will have to invest heavily in climate protection, mitigation of CO2 emissions and adaptation strategies. Against this background, adelphi supports KfW Entwicklungsbank in the conceptual design and organization of an international symposium on “Cities in a Changing Climate - Financing adaptation and mitigation in the urban context of developing countries and emerging economies” that will take place from November 13 to 14, 2012 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany.
The event brings together representatives of bilateral and multilateral development organisations, experts from scientific institutions, the private sector and delegates from partner countries of German development cooperation. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange practical experiences and scientific findings on financing and implementing low carbon and adaptation strategies in urban areas.
