The relevance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for peace and security, the geopolitical dimension of the 2030 Agenda and the resulting tasks for foreign policy are the topics of the HLPF Side Event, which adelphi organises in cooperation with the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations.
Driving transformative change: foreign affairs and the 2030 Agenda: The relevance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to foreign policy and international security
The essence of the SDGs – greater welfare, security and sustainability for all – aligns with core foreign policy objectives. But what is the role of foreign policy in the global sustainability architecture? And what are the fields of engagement and areas of cooperation under a new “Sustainable Foreign Policy”?
This HLPF side event will address these questions in order to better understand how to leverage the SDGs to achieve core foreign policy objectives. It will examine the 2030 Agenda's geopolitical implications and its links to peace and security, exploring how foreign policy can support SDG implementation with a focus on the SDGs under review at the 2019 High-Level Political Forum. The discussion will draw on a recent study Driving Transformative Change: Foreign Affairs and the 2030 Agenda.
