Sustainability is increasingly viewed as a contribution to the stability and security of our future. Private sector and government entities are equally called upon to redefine their social roles and responsibilities.
Rainer Agster and Johannes Schuhmann showed one way in which community involvement can be initiated and promoted in practice with their presentation on “Awards as an effective and efficient tool for directing philanthropic, investments' in Russia", given at the 9th Annual Meeting of the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS) on 20-21 September in St. Petersburg. According to their talk, awards are an effective instrument to advance the knowledge and perception of social responsibility, especially in Russia where CR has so far received very little attention.
The importance of corporate responsibility and the current international developments in this field were in the focus of the 4th International Conference on Corporate Social Responsibility, organised by Humboldt University on 22-24 September in Berlin. The topic "Social Entrepreneurship: A New Development Paradigm" is at the centre of the panel organised by adelphi and moderated by Dr. Minu Hemmati. Rainer Agster, senior project manager at adelphi, Markus Beckmann, Assistant Professor at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg, James Kyles from the KOLCAFÉ Initiative and Helen Marquard, Executive Director of the SEED Initiative discussed, among other things, whether social entrepreneurs can offer solutions to social problems, particularly in developing countries, or how market-based, bottom-up approaches typical of social entrepreneurs fit with traditional development cooperation.
