A number of studies have demonstrated that the existence of a consistent energy management system (EnMS) plays a crucial role in sustainable energy conservation. For this reason, various countries in the EU have introduced national standards for energy management systems. These were subsequently used as a basis for a European energy management standard (DIN EN 16001:2009), which was introduced on 1 July 2009.
However, these activities are not limited to Europe: countries on other continents have also taken steps to promote energy efficiency as part of their national climate protection policies. The US government started encouraging businesses to comply with energy efficiency standards as early as 1990 and introduced a national standard for energy management systems in 2000. South Korea, China and Thailand have also intensified their efforts to protect the climate in recent years with the introduction of national energy management standards. These various initiatives were consolidated into an international standard on 1 June 2011: DIN EN ISO 50001:2011.
