The SEED award for sustainable entrepreneurship is part of an international competition distinguishing outstanding entrepreneurial spirit and engagement amongst local environmental and development initiatives. On behalf of the SEED secretariat, adelphi assumed responsibility for the design, organisation and implementation of the competition for the sixth year in a row.
In 2013, up to 35 sustainable businesses worldwide were granted SEED awards. The winners received support in developing their business plans and strengthening their business partnerships. Additionally they were granted opportunities for forging new relationships with potential partners and sponsors, and their business ideas were publicly marketed at international events. In order to participate in the competition, the small businesses must address issues of poverty and sustainability in an effective manner.
As more partners and donors have signed on to the SEED competition, geographical focus for 2013 was given to Ethiopia, India, Colombia, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam and South Africa. Gender Equality Awards also took place for the first time, which offer support to those businesses actively working for more equality and better opportunities for women.
SEED was founded in 2002 through a joint effort by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). adelphi runs both the organisation and administration of the competition.
