Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
The Global Environment Facility (GEF), founded in 1992, is the financial instrument of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Convention on Biological Diversity, and other environmental conventions in the framework of the UN. The Facility invests in strategic initiatives with the aim of generating global environmental benefits, including the conservation of biodiversity, soil resources, international waters, and the reduction of the greenhouse effect as well as persistent organic pollutants. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is one of 18 partner organizations which support countries in the design and implementation of GEF projects.
The GEF project cycle includes a one-year preparation phase to design the project based on the inputs from counterparts, local partners and experts from relevant sectors. The process is supported by an international project design specialist. At the request of the governments of Serbia and Uruguay, FAO is currently leading the preparatory phase of two GEF projects: "Contribution of Sustainable Forest Management to a Low Emission and Resilient Development“ in Serbia and "Climate-smart Livestock Production and Land Restoration in the Uruguayan Rangelands" in Uruguay. Objectives of the projects are the reduction of greenhouse gases and the conservation of biodiversity through an optimized management of forests and rangelands.
adelphi's services include support to the project design process, editing of the project documents and endorsement templates according to FAO and GEF standards. In addition, adelphi guides and participates in the validation process with counterparts and partners at local and national levels.
