After Southeast Asia, Central America is the region most affected by natural disasters, in particular regular droughts, storms, flooding, landslides and earthquakes. adelphi has been assisting Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe, Caritas International and their partners to implement various projects that raise awareness, and educate and advise local communities about the risks of natural disasters in three departments in Guatemala. The goal is to improve disaster prevention and introduce new measures that will contribute to disaster risk reduction.
With the aim of benefiting future projects, this publication compiles relevant information for disaster risk reduction projects in Central America, such as lessons learned and best practices, and presents the main challenges and successes of the projects. Furthermore, the projects’ intervention strategies are analysed in the context of the Sendai Framework. In this way, this publication highlights the projects’ support for the implementation of the Sendai Framework via local actions in Guatemala.
