A sustainable solution for purifying drinking water in coastal communities developed under the AdaptCap project has been selected as one of 10 finalists in the „Adapting to a Changing Climate” competition. Support this solution through your vote in the audience award!
Rising sea levels and more frequent seawater flooding due to hurricanes increase the salinization of groundwater sources of communities along India’s South-Eastern coast. This turns the groundwater unusable for drinking purposes. In contrast to complex methods for groundwater desalination the pilot project presents an easy, low-cost and sustainable alternative: surface water is purified through a natural filtration system, subsequently disinfected and then, by means of a solar pump, transferred to the village’s drinking water well.
The solution submitted by the local project partner Academy of Gandhian Studies is now in the race for the awards. For the audience award of USD 20.000 we greatly appreciate your support: Until 2nd of October one time per day you can vote for the Academy of Gandhian Studies online, on facebook and via SMS!
adelphi supported the development, implementation and maintenance of the pilot project through technical advice and capacity building in the framework of the EU-financed project AdaptCap – Strengthening Adaptation Capacities and Minimizing Risks of Vulnerable Coastal Communities in India.
