Building on the Paris Agreement, leaders of the EU and India signed a Joint Declaration on a Clean Energy and Climate Partnership in 2016. adelphi is leading a consortium providing technical assistance shaping this cooperation. In Marrakesh, a side event helped deepening the climate dialogue.
At a joint event today at the Marrakesh climate conference, the EU and India further bolstered their joint efforts to combat climate change. Representatives from both sides shared their experiences with technology and policy innovations, with a view to supporting the implementation of their nationally determined contributions or NDCs.
Both the EU and India are major players in global efforts to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. Respectively the world’s third and fourth largest carbon emitters, they are heavyweights in the international climate negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Agreed at the 13th EU-India Summit in Brussels in late March 2016, shortly after the historic climate summit in Paris in December 2015, the Joint Declaration on a new Clean Energy and Climate Partnership shows the strong resolve of these key climate policy players to continue to work together to successfully implement the Paris Agreement.
Building on the existing Energy Dialogue, which has existed since 2005, and the 2012 Joint Declaration for Enhanced Cooperation on Energy between the EU and India, the partnership is set to continue and strengthen cooperation between the EU and India. This will be complemented by a new dialogue on climate action that will pave the way for constructive collaboration on the implementation of India’s INDC and related mitigation and adaptation initiatives, including technology transfer and business cooperation with EU member states and businesses.
adelphi leads a consortium providing technical assistance to the EEAS in organising the EU-India Climate Change Dialogue and Partnership. The general aim is to create a platform that supports both countries in exchanging knowledge, competencies, and technologies in order to gain and sustain an understanding of each other’s needs. Moreover, ongoing EU-India initiatives are to be embedded in the process to maximize synergies. To foster this inclusive dialogue, a series of expert speaker events, a study visit to Europe for Indian officials, and a closing conference in summer 2017 will be held. The platform approach facilitates exchange and communication between European and Indian experts, key stakeholders, and government, particularly in the field of clean energy and climate.
