Water scarcity, flooding, heat waves – climate change can severely affect the private sector. Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change as they heavily depend on local resources. At the same time, the private sector is capable of developing locally relevant, effective solutions to the challenges of climate change. Yet, many SMEs lack knowledge and resources for identifying adequate adaptation measures.
On behalf of GIZ and the Academy for International Cooperation (AIZ), adelphi conducted an online training that helped consultants and multipliers understand how businesses can become more climate resilient. Participants learned how to use the 4-step Climate Expert tool to support SMEs in analysing climate risks and opportunities, prioritizing adaptation measures and designing adaptation strategies. The online training combined ten online sessions with self-learning and case study work.
The underlying Climate Expert tool was developed by the GIZ Global Program on Private Sector Adaptation to Climate Chance and adelphi on the basis of real SME cases and is available online under www.climate-expert.org. The tool specifically addresses businesses and includes a climate risk assessment and a cost-benefit analysis (CBA).
