SEED is a global partnership for supporting sustainable development and the green economy worldwide. It was founded in 2002 within the framework of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. Founding partners are the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Since 2006, adelphi has been supporting SEED as an implementing partner and has been responsible for carrying out multiple programme components. In 2013, adelphi took on the project sponsorship and carries out all activities within the SEED programme.
SEED offers a variety of support programmes for eco-inclusive enterprises in developing countries and emerging economies. The SEED Enterprise Support programmes directly assist individual enterprises at multiple levels of business development - from the early stages of inspiration and concept-building to scaling up or the replication of proven, successful eco-inclusive business models in other geographical locations. The well-known SEED Award rewards outstanding eco-inclusive enterprises around the globe. SEED conceptualises and organises a wide variety of forums for exchanging experiences and initiating cooperation with other social and environmental businesses and helps to provide extensive national and international visibility for the social and environmental businesses it supports. Besides the direct enterprise support, the SEED Ecosystem Building programmes cultivate networks of collaborators, finance and policy to support eco-inclusive entrepreneurship. SEED provides platforms for dialogue between local, national and international stakeholders and works to improve the quality of relations between these stakeholders and enterprises.
adelphi is responsible for the overarching project coordination and for carrying out the SEED Programmes. Within the framework of the project sponsorship, adelphi continually assesses the progress and the social and environmental effects of the project activities as well as the success of SEED Award winners. adelphi compiles the results in case and sectoral studies and in yearly reports.
