SEED – Supporting the Green Economy and Sustainable Businesses in Developing and Emerging Countries

Nuru Energy

SEED is a global partnership for supporting sustainable development and the green economy worldwide. It was founded in 2002 within the framework of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. Founding partners are the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Since 2006, adelphi has been supporting SEED as an implementing partner and has been responsible for carrying out multiple programme components. In 2013, adelphi took on the project sponsorship and carries out all activities within the SEED programme.

An important component of these activities are the SEED Awards, which are giving to inclusive and sustainable businesses in developing and emerging countries. Since 2009, a particular focus has been placed on businesses in Africa. The award winners are honoured in the course of the yearly SEED Africa Symposium and then receive a six-month consulting service as part of SEED Support with individually tailored solutions for business development in the founding and development phases. SEED additionally conceptualises and organises a wide variety of forums for exchanging experiences and initiating cooperation with other social and environmental businesses, helping provide extensive national and international visibility for the social and environmental businesses supported by SEED. adelphi is responsible for the overarching project coordination and for carrying out the SEED Awards cycles, and for providing the support services to the SEED Award winners.

Within the framework of the project sponsorship, adelphi continually assesses the progress and the social and environmental effects of the project activities and the success of the SEED Award winners. adelphi compiles the results in case and sectoral studies and in yearly reports.
