The international norm ISO 14001 sets the requirements for environmental management systems to establish global standards. Since its introduction, the norm has been revised to increase its user friendliness among other things. The European Union wants to support medium-sized and small businesses in integrating environmental management into their processes. To this end, it has developed the voluntary environmental management system Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), which helps this target group to systematically improve their environmental performance and at the same time cut costs.
EMAS covers all requirements of the ISO 14001 norm and surpasses them in several respects. This brochure (available only in German) compares both systems and shows the main differences.
