European large carnivores are challenging species to manage due to their large ranges and the potential conflict they cause with human interests. One of the main conflicts is caused by the depredation of livestock by large carnivores. Many countries now provide farmers with financial support to put in place prevention measures (fencing, livestock guarding dogs, surveillance systems) to protect livestock against large carnivores. This paper reviews how member states use of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (Pillar 2 of the Common Agricultural Policy, CAP) to support coexistence.
