Through the pilot project "Check-in Energieeffizienz" ("Check-in Energy Efficiency"), the German Energy Agency (dena) is supporting up to 30 pioneering renovation projects in hotels and hostels. adelphi is part of the selection panel, which will be choosing the most promising projects.
Hotels and hostels are among the energy-intensive businesses: the cost of energy normally constitutes five to ten percent of their turnover. At the same time, however, there is also great potential in the accommodation industry for large energy savings. Thanks to relevant savings measures, businesses profit not only from lower costs - the indoor climate and thus guests' comfort are also generally positively impacted.
In order to demonstrate the myriad renovation options available, the German Energy Agency (dena) started the project "Check-in Energieeffizienz" ("Check-in Energy Efficiency"). For this pilot project, dena is looking for up to 30 existing buildings that require either partial or complete energy optimisation. The goal of the project is to identify renovation projects that can serve as role models for other businesses in the hospitality industry to follow.
In order to choose the best renovation concepts, dena put together an expert panel, which includes amongst others representatives from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), KfW Development Bank, and the University of Wuppertal. adelphi also has a seat on this committee: Georg Ratjen, a senior project manager, brings his expertise to the panel as a specialist in energy efficiency and energy management.
Hotel and hostel operators have until 28 February 2015 to submit a summarised renovation plan applying for one of the coveted places in the pilot project. The selected projects will benefit from an especially attractive funding package. Moreover, dena will document each one of the up to 30 pilot projects comprehensively, from the initial structural survey to the final implementation of the efficiency measures.
