On the occasion of the International Tourism Fair (ITB) in Berlin, adelphi together with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and further partners presented the results of a project on sustainable tourism in Thailand.
adelphi ‘s role was to detect the environmental impacts of tourism at the Koh Chang Archipelago, a group of 51 isle at south-east of Thailand. For this purpose, the baseline of current greenhouse gas emissions has been evaluated and adequate mitigation measures suggested. Especially developed visualisation software helps the responsible persons to consider climate relevant criteria at planning decisions better. By modifying certain parameters, such as development of tourist numbers, energy sources, or energy use, different scenarios for the development of greenhouse gas emissions – especially for the Koh Chang Archipelago – can be designed. Furthermore, the software gives the opportunity to define reduction targets, which can be used for different sectors.
The initiative for this purpose, comes from a collaboration of the Thai “Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration“ (DASTA) and the GIZ in line with the International Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
