Inclusive businesses serve more and more people living at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) and thus tap into a steadily growing market. How to expand the access to finance especially for this type of business partners or clients was the subject of discussion of about 70 business leaders, investors and experts, as well as the winners of the G20 Challenge during a regional workshop in June in Colombia.
After the first two workshops in Berlin and Mumbai, the regional G20 Inclusive Business Workshop in Latin America was held in the framework of the Inter-American Development Bank’s II Base Forum 2013 in Medellín, Colombia. The discussion centered on how inclusive businesses can act as enablers for financial inclusion – for example by providing access to micro-credit and insurance, or alternative payment systems to their customers, suppliers or distributors.
Participants addressed the core challenges businesses are facing while providing financing to the Base of the Pryramid and discussed innovative approaches and the required framework conditions to enable the scale of adapted financing solutions.
The outcomes of the workshop will be fed into the G20 Development Working Group and serve as a basis for future policy recommendations on fostering inclusive business models.
adelphi is designing and organising the whole G20 Inclusive Business Workshop series on behalf of GIZ and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The next workshop is planned in Africa for November 2013. The documentation of the workshop will soon be available on www.g20challenge.com.
