One of the simplest and most promising ways of conserving energy – in particular from a climate protection perspective – is to reduce the need to generate, transport, store and consume it in the first place. This also applies to countries in South Asia.
In particular India, Nepal and Bangladesh have recognized the need to use energy efficiently in order to conserve resources and have started to establish institutional structures to enable large-scale implementation of energy efficiency measures. The Regional Energy Efficiency Project (REEP) organizes training sessions, conferences and study tours to support these young institutions in a professional and systematic manner.
The Indian-Nepalese delegation trip in August 2011 in Berlin and Frankfurt focused on sharing experiences on possible models and instruments to finance measures to boost energy efficiency in both the private and the industrial sphere. During the study tour, the 16 participants from Indian state energy authorities and the Nepalese Ministry for Energy were shown a variety of methods to implement tools to finance energy efficiency measures, primarily focusing on models that would be suitable for use in South Asia. The tour included visits to the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development, the energy service company Berlin Energieagentur and the development bank KfW.
The study tour was organized by adelphi on behalf of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and was financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
