As part of the second Intersessional Meeting held in New York from 15-16 December 2011 to prepare for the Rio+20 Summit 2012, adelphi organised a Side Event on 16 December on the topic of “Achieving Implementation – accountability, engagement and multi-stakeholder cooperation”. This event
The Side Event, which was organised together with several US universities (New York University, Boston University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology), the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Brazilian NGO Vitae Civilis, examined various strategies to improve the implementation of policies and measures in the field of sustainability. Dennis Tänzler and Janina Barkemeyer from adelphi gave a presentation on how Germany's partnerships and alliances with various emerging countries aim to create added value beyond the climate protection agenda and build an economy which accounts for environmental and social concerns.
The sustainability conference Rio+20 will take place in June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro and will be attended by various heads of state and government. It aims to reach agreements on issues concerning “Green Economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty reduction” and on UN reform in the area of sustainability. The second Intersessional Meeting of the UNCSD in New York from 15-16 December 2011 focused on putting together the first draft of the final document for Rio+20, which included submissions from a large number of UN member states and political groups. From January 2012 monthly meetings are scheduled to discuss the “zero draft”.
