Advancing climate change and the associated increase in extreme weather events have the potential to dramatically increase global inequalities. The need for climate finance to help countries adapt to climate change and counteract the progression of global warming is urgent and continually increasing. Countries’ climate change mitigation goals and adaptation priorities are defined by Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). To achieve the NDC goals, they must be translated into a pipeline of transformative climate projects and bankable investment programs. Since climate projects are typically implemented in sectors such as water, transport, energy or agriculture, sector experts play a key role in achieving the NDC goals.
Against this background, adelphi has already developed two interactive and modular training programs in the past to help build urgently needed climate finance expertise in the global south: the “Climate Finance Readiness Training (CliFiT)”, which is aimed primarily at climate policy decision-makers, and the “Climate Finance Training for Sector Experts (CliFit4SE)”, which specifically addresses sector experts. Due to the increasing demand for climate finance training at the subnational level and from sector experts, German Development Cooperation (GIZ) commissioned adelphi to revise the existing training materials in order to make them applicable for both moderated training formats and self-learning programs. In addition, adelphi expanded the training materials to include specific modules on the water, transport and agriculture sectors. In this way, experts from these sectors are specifically instructed in identifying climate project ideas and developing them into financeable project concepts. Furthermore, adelphi conducted two interactive online training of trainer workshops to expand the pool of qualified international climate finance experts.
