More than 2700 employees of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and its subsidiary authorities are working to support environmental protection. A total of 60 federal agencies and state institutions use the EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) to continuously reduce their own environmental impact. Especially relevant are topics such as, for example, employee involvement, responsibilities of top management, use of environmental indicators, indirect environmental aspects like mobility and business trips, and sustainable public acquisitions. The guide, produced under commission of the BMUB, explains the benefits of EMAS for bureaucracies, demonstrates the steps necessary for introduction, and gives administrators advice on the topics most relevant to them. A self-assessment checklist, quotations from the bureaucracies, and links to further information round out the guide.
