Climate change is amongst the most formidable global challenges of the 21st century. Major efforts are still required in the mission of establishing a low-carbon and climate-resilient society. adelphi supports its clients in the most important areas in climate policy: mitigation, adaptation, technology and financing as well as security and stability. By means of consulting in international political processes, we seek to place new issues on the political agenda and to promote the development and implementation of climate mitigation campaigns. These issues include foreign policy initiatives in the field of climate diplomacy as well as the development of the major potential for solutions in cities and local authorities. We investigate the consequences of climate change, evaluate climate and energy policy instruments and develop action strategies and decision-making systems for adaptation processes. In recent years, we have developed expertise in consultancy and training in the fields of carbon trading and climate finance which are in demand throughout the world.

  • Due to the increasingly visible consequences of climate change, there is a growing need for practical instruments with which to plan for adaptation to climate change, to assess the success of measures taken and to facilitate an ongoing learning process. For this purpose, adelphi compiles vulnerability analyses for local authorities, cities and governments, with which particularly affected sectors and populations can be identified and so that concrete adaptation measures can be planned. Furthermore, adelphi uses vulnerability analyses to assess the success of adaptation measures taken (M&E of adaptation). By these actions, we help a large number of national and international partners to effectively adapt to the effects of climate change.

  • Rising average temperatures, extremely heavy rainfall, increasingly regular heatwaves and droughts – the effects of climate change demand more than strengthened adaptive measures. In the light of the accompanying risks to health, infrastructures and logistics, decision-makers must extensively adapt their perspectives accordingly. adelphi supports local authorities, provincial governments, government ministries and international organisations to integrate issues in adaptation to climate change into local, sectoral and regional programming. We devise educational and qualifications measures for businesses which we implement worldwide. Our research on action-provoking communications on the topics of adaptation and disaster risk reduction is conveyed though our implementation of campaigns.

  • The effects of climate change also threaten international security. The agenda of politicians working in foreign and security policy covers conflict-related risks as well as climate diplomacy’s potential for conflict and crisis prevention. In this regard, adelphi compiles regional and sectoral risk analyses for international organisations and governments. Moreover, adelphi has operated the “Environment, Conflict and Cooperation” platform for over a decade, the largest information portal on this issue worldwide. Subsequent projects investigate the questions of how climate change can be anchored into bilateral and multilateral dialogues, which possibilities for climate diplomacy should be supported in tandem with international negotiations and which narratives are dominant in this field. Last but not least, adelphi is developing methods for use in conflict-sensitive programmes, methods which implementing organisations can use for the early recognition of confrontations resulting from climate change and to counteract potentially violent developments.

  • In the fight against climate change, states rely on various different measures. Market-based instruments – with emissions trading leading the way – play a preeminent role. The focal point of adelphi’s work is the analysis of current and nascent Emissions Trading Schemes (ETS), as well as options for their further development and future linking towards a global carbon market. adelphi makes a central contribution to the exchange of knowledge and experiences in emissions trading via project management for the offices of the International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP) and the Working Group for Emissions Trading (AGE), as well as analytical consulting projects on the design and implementation of educational activities in the field of ETS.

  • Alongside the development and linking of current Emissions Trading Schemes, the development of further market-based mechanisms for international climate action and their gradual consolidation represent another major challenge. adelphi supports this process via analyses and consultation in respect to content, as well as the design of dialogue processes and training schemes, from good practice in the development of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) to the comparison of the regulation of international offset mechanisms.

  • New international mechanisms such as the Green Climate Fund as well as further multilateral and bilateral initiatives offer developing countries and emerging economies the chance to pursue low-carbon and climate-resilient development avenues. At the same time, the many and varied funding streams constitute a considerable challenge for national financial systems. adelphi provides support in this area through analysis of Climate Finance Readiness of individual countries. Moreover, adelphi has developed a modular training concept – the Training Toolkit CLIFIT – which guides decision-makers systematically in the various aspects of climate finance. With its work on the role of the private sector in climate finance, adelphi is focusing on an issue of ever increasing international importance.
